Which efficiency unit should I use?
Use whatever your car shows. The US usually quotes MPG (miles per gallon), much of the world uses litres per 100 km, and some places use km per litre. The calculator changes the distance and price units to match your choice, so you do not have to convert anything by hand.
How is the cost worked out?
It works out the fuel needed for the distance, then multiplies by the price. For MPG that is distance ÷ MPG = gallons; for L/100 km it is distance ÷ 100 × the figure = litres; for km/L it is distance ÷ the figure = litres. Round trip simply doubles the distance.
