What’s the difference between ASCII emoji, emoticons and kaomoji?
They’re all faces made of text characters. Western emoticons read sideways, like :-) and :D. Kaomoji are Japanese-style faces read upright, like (＾▽＾) and ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, often using unicode characters for expressive eyes and arms. This page collects all of them — plus famous ones like the Lenny face and the table flip — in one searchable place.
Will these faces work everywhere I paste them?
Almost everywhere — chats, social posts, bios, comments and documents all accept plain text, and these faces are just text. A few very old systems with limited fonts may show a box for the fancier unicode characters, but every modern phone and browser displays them fine.
